How Exercise is Fuel to Your Child’s Brain

June 12, 20253 min read

Is your child constantly fidgeting, struggling to focus, battling big emotions, or falling behind in school?

Before assuming they need to try harder, sit still, or behave better - ask yourself this:

How much are they moving?

Movement is not just exercise.

It's essential fuel for the developing brain

In fact, movement is the body's way of building the very neurological pathways responsible for focus, learning, behaviour, and emotional regulation.

Without enough of it - or without the right kinds of movement - development can stall.

Did you know that kids should be getting 3-4 hours of exercise every day?

Most children fall far short of this.

Many only get gym or P.E. class a couple of times a week and even then, not all kids are actively moving.

Too much time spent sitting in front of screens or being sedentary at home can significantly impact their development.

But there's more:

Many children with learning challenges, attention difficulties, or emotional dysregulation are not just lacking movement - they're holding onto primitive reflexes. These are the involuntary reflexes babies are born with, and if they don’t naturally integrate in the first year of life, they create ongoing barriers to efficient brain function.

These retained reflexes can leave your child stuck in survival mode, constantly battling stress responses, coordination struggles, and poor focus.

It's why no amount of traditional teaching or therapy may seem to "stick.”

The foundation - their neurological readiness - just isn’t there yet.

But the good news? This can change.

When you provide the brain with tailored, intentional movements, you're not just tiring your child out - you’re developing and maturing their foundational system.

You’re helping them move out of fight-or-flight and into a state where real learning, calm, and connection become possible.

Why Movement Matters for Brain Development:

  • Boosts Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) - the brain’s version of Miracle-Grow.

  • Strengthens the Cerebellum, your child’s control centre for coordination, balance, attention, and behaviour. The cerebellum contains more neurons than the rest of the brain combined because it plays such a huge role in overall function. The best way to strengthen it? Movement.

  • Integrates primitive reflexes, freeing the brain for higher-level thinking and regulation.

  • Activates the right brain, which manages emotional regulation, motor planning, and social connection.

  • Improves core strength and eye tracking, both crucial for reading and classroom success.
