PANS PANDAS Parent Support | You Are Not Alone | BHM

April 23, 20264 min read

When your child changes overnight, the world stops making sense. The child you tucked in last night is not the child who woke up this morning. And nobody around you seems to understand.

Not the teachers. Not the GP. Not the well-meaning family members who suggest it’s "just a phase".

If you’re living this right now, we want you to know: we see you. We’ve been where you are. And you are not alone.

The Loneliest Diagnosis You’ve Never Heard Of

Parents of children with PANS and PANDAS often describe a grief that’s hard to explain. Your child is right there in front of you, but the sudden personality changes can make it feel as though you’ve lost them. It’s a particular kind of heartbreak, and it’s made worse by the isolation that comes with it.

Because most people haven’t heard of PANS or PANDAS, you find yourself explaining the condition over and over, to doctors, to schools, to family, often to people who don’t believe you. The frustration is real. The exhaustion is real. And the guilt that so many parents carry ("Did I miss something? Could I have prevented this?") is real too.

So let’s say this clearly: PANS and PANDAS are autoimmune conditions. They are not caused by anything you did or didn’t do.

Practical Steps When You Don’t Know Where to Start

When everything feels overwhelming, small, concrete actions can help you regain a sense of control:

Learn the signs. Understanding what’s happening in your child’s brain and body is the single most empowering thing you can do. Our PANS and PANDAS symptoms guide breaks it all down.

Start a symptom diary. Write down when the changes started, what your child was ill with beforehand, and how symptoms have shifted since. This timeline will be invaluable when you speak with doctors.

Read more on our website. We’ve created a dedicated page to help parents of children with PANS and PANDAS.

Request testing. Ask your GP for strep antibody testing (ASO and Anti-DNase B). If they’re unfamiliar with PANS/PANDAS, the information in our guides can support the conversation.

Find your people. This is one of the most powerful things you can do. Our private Facebook group is full of parents who get it, who’ve lived it, and who can offer the kind of support that only comes from shared experience.

Look after yourself. We know it feels like every ounce of your energy needs to go to your child. But here’s the truth: when your nervous system is dysregulated, your child feels it. Looking after yourself isn’t a luxury. It’s part of your child’s healing.

Resources Built for Parents Like You

Everything we create at The Brain Health Movement is built by a parent, for parents. Lucia started this because when Quinn changed overnight, she couldn’t find what she needed. So she built it. Here’s what’s available to support your PANS/PANDAS journey:

Our PANS/PANDAS Support Page: An overview of the condition, what’s happening in the brain, and where to go from here.

Free Guides: A comprehensive downloadable guide covering symptoms, the science, the three-pronged treatment approach, natural support strategies, and further resources.

Podcast Episodes: Season 2, Episode 4 with Dr Lindsey Wells (the mystery behind sudden psychiatric changes) and Season 2, Episode 8 with Dr Nancy O’Hara (is it behaviour, or is the brain under attack?). Parent-friendly, expert-led, and deeply reassuring to listen to.

The Whole Child Healing Roadmap Course: Our course includes a dedicated autoimmunity module with Dr Nancy O’Hara, but what makes it so valuable for PANS/PANDAS families is that every expert in the course is experienced in supporting children with these conditions. Nervous system regulation, gut and immune health, inflammation, detoxification, nutrition, retained reflexes and neurodevelopment are all covered in depth. This is the roadmap Lucia wishes existed when Quinn was at his worst.

Free Masterclass: "From Burnout to Breakthrough": A free 60-minute session that uncovers the real root causes behind conditions like ADHD, autism, anxiety, OCD, tics, and PANS/PANDAS, and reveals why your own nervous system holds the key to your child’s healing.

There Is Hope

The path through PANS and PANDAS is hard. There’s no getting around that. But children do recover. Families do come through the other side. And the parents who find their way to the right information, the right support, and the right community are the ones who see real change.

You have already taken the most important step by looking for answers. That instinct, that refusal to accept that this is "just behaviour", that’s what will make the difference for your child.

You don’t need to do this alone. You just need a map, and the right guides. We’re here.
