It can begin gradually.
“I don't want to go today.”
A stomach ache on Sunday night.
Tears while getting dressed.
A child taking longer and longer to get through the front door.
Or perhaps your child does get to school, but you are repeatedly hearing that they cannot concentrate, won't sit still, avoid their work, struggle to read or seem overwhelmed by seemingly ordinary classroom demands.
Eventually, parents can find themselves asking:
Why is my child finding school so hard?
And sometimes:
Why is my child refusing school altogether?
It is very easy for these struggles to become framed as a problem of behaviour, motivation or compliance.
But what if we started somewhere else?
What if, instead of asking only “How do I get my child back into school?”, we also asked:
“What is making school so difficult for my child in the first place?”
Because school refusal is rarely the whole story.
It may be the visible end point of a child who has been struggling for far longer than anybody realised.

A child who becomes distressed about school is communicating something.
That does not necessarily mean the school itself is the problem.
It also does not mean that every child who refuses school has the same underlying difficulty.
The challenge is to become curious about what the behaviour is telling us.
For one child, school might feel socially frightening.
For another, noise, lights and busy classrooms may be overwhelming.
Another child may be struggling to read, write or follow instructions while watching classmates appear to do those things effortlessly.
Some children may be using enormous amounts of energy simply to sit upright, coordinate their eyes or maintain attention.
Others may be dealing with health, sleep, anxiety or nervous-system regulation difficulties that make the demands of a full school day feel impossible.
And often, several factors are happening together.
This is why looking at the whole child matters.
School anxiety does not always look like a child saying, “I feel anxious.”
It can look like:
Stomach aches or headaches before school
Difficulty sleeping on school nights
Tears, anger or panic in the morning
Repeated requests to stay home
Refusing to get dressed or leave the house
Becoming distressed on Sunday evenings
Difficulty separating from a parent
Increased irritability or emotional outbursts
School avoidance or persistent absence
Exhaustion after school
Holding everything together during the day and melting down at home

Some children can suppress their distress remarkably well while at school.
Teachers may genuinely report:
“They're absolutely fine here.”
And yet the same child comes home and completely unravels.
That apparent contradiction can be very confusing for parents.
But it may simply mean that your child has spent the entire day using every available resource to cope.
Home is where the floodgates finally open.
Imagine trying to concentrate while somebody startles you repeatedly.
Or trying to read when your eyes keep losing their place.
Or being asked to sit still while your body is constantly working to maintain balance.
Or trying to listen to a teacher while every scrape of a chair, conversation and movement around the room competes for your attention.
Then imagine somebody repeatedly telling you:
“Concentrate.”
“Sit still.”
“Try harder.”
“Stop messing around.”
For some children, this can be much closer to the reality of school than adults realise.
The classroom may look perfectly ordinary from the outside.
Inside the child's system, it may feel anything but ordinary.
Our nervous system is continually assessing and responding to what is happening around us.
Noise.
Movement.
Light.
Touch.
Emotional stress.
Social interaction.
Demands.
When the system is coping well, we can adapt to those inputs without becoming overwhelmed.
But for some children, the threshold can be much lower.
A noisy dining hall, sudden movement, bright lights, a busy corridor or being called upon unexpectedly may provoke a far bigger stress response than we would expect.
Over the course of a day, those small moments can accumulate.
The child's system has to keep recovering and regulating.
Eventually, capacity runs out.
This may help explain why some children seem increasingly anxious as the school week progresses, why they struggle with transitions or unpredictable environments and why they may collapse emotionally once they reach home.

One developmental area worth understanding is primitive reflexes.
Primitive reflexes are automatic movement patterns present during infancy. They form part of the earliest development of the nervous system and should gradually become inhibited as more mature neurological systems develop.
If elements of these early reflex patterns remain active beyond infancy, they are sometimes described as retained primitive reflexes.
They are not a diagnosis, and their presence should never be assumed to explain every difficulty a child has.
But they can provide clues that aspects of development warrant further assessment.
One reflex often discussed in relation to heightened startle responses is the Moro reflex.
The Moro reflex is an infant startle response. Sudden movement or stimulation can trigger a whole-body reaction.
As development progresses, that early reflex should become increasingly regulated.
If a child appears extremely reactive to sudden noise, movement, light or unexpected sensory input, it may be worth considering whether developmental and sensory factors are contributing to their overall stress load.
The point is not to decide from a checklist that your child has a retained reflex.
The point is to recognise that what looks like “overreacting” may have a physiological component worth exploring.
Consider how much of the school day depends on reading.
Instructions.
Textbooks.
Worksheets.
Whiteboards.
Tests.
Homework.
Even subjects a child loves can become stressful when accessing the information is difficult.
And reading depends upon far more than recognising letters and knowing what words mean.
The eyes need to move accurately across a line of text, remain stable, shift focus appropriately and find the next line.
If a child repeatedly loses their place, skips words, rereads sections or struggles to keep their eyes stable, reading can become exhausting.
From the outside, they may appear slow or distracted.
Inside, they may be working extraordinarily hard.
Over time, that repeated experience matters emotionally too.
Imagine watching everybody else finish while you are still halfway through.
Imagine being asked to read aloud when you know you might lose your place.
Imagine repeatedly believing:
“Everyone else can do this. Why can't I?”
Eventually, a child may not simply dislike reading.
They may begin to dislike school.
Another primitive reflex discussed in relation to visual tracking and classroom work is the Asymmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex, or ATNR.
In early infancy, this reflex connects turning the head with automatic movement patterns through the body.

As motor development progresses, the child should gain greater independent control of their head, eyes and limbs.
If elements of the pattern remain active, tasks requiring the eyes and head to work independently may potentially become more difficult.
That matters because classroom learning constantly requires children to move their eyes:
From the board to the page.
Across a sentence.
Down to the next line.
From a book to their written work.
If visual tracking is inefficient, the child may lose their place, reread words, struggle to copy from the board or find reading much slower than expected.
It is important not to assume that all reading difficulty comes from primitive reflexes, or that a child with dyslexia simply has a reflex problem.
Reading difficulties can have many causes.
But the physical and visual foundations of learning deserve to be part of the conversation.
This is another complaint parents hear repeatedly.
But sitting still is not actually a passive activity.
The brain and body are constantly making tiny adjustments to keep us upright and balanced.
Those postural responses usually happen automatically.
If a child's balance and postural systems are less mature, however, staying upright may require much more effort.
What looks like constant fidgeting could sometimes be a child's way of continually correcting their position.
Another developmental reflex, the Symmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex, or STNR, involves relationships between movement of the head and the upper and lower body.
If elements remain active, looking down at a desk and then back up again may make maintaining a stable seated position more difficult.
So before concluding:
“My child simply cannot behave in class,”
it can be helpful to ask:
“Is sitting still actually harder for my child than it is for everybody else?”
Children are often told to “pay attention”.
But attention is dependent upon multiple systems working together.
A child needs to:
Filter irrelevant sensory information
Keep their eyes focused
Maintain an appropriate level of alertness
Regulate their body
Follow spoken language
Hold information in working memory
Ignore distractions
Manage emotions
Remain physically comfortable enough to learn
That is a sophisticated neurological task.
If several of those underlying systems are under strain, attention becomes much harder.
This does not mean every child who struggles to concentrate has the same underlying problem.
It does mean that “won't concentrate” and “can't concentrate under these conditions” are very different possibilities.
Screens are now woven into childhood.
They can educate, entertain and provide parents with valuable breathing space.
This is not about demonising technology.
But it is worth asking what patterns of attention different activities are training.
Fast-moving digital content can provide frequent novelty, stimulation and reward.
A classroom often requires almost the opposite:
Sustained attention.
Waiting.
Listening.
Reading.
Working through difficulty.
Completing something without an immediate reward.
For a child already struggling with attention or regulation, large amounts of highly stimulating screen use may therefore be one area worth examining.

Rather than aiming for perfection, look for balance.
Could ten minutes of scrolling become ten minutes outdoors?
Could one screen-based activity become drawing, Lego, reading together, kicking a football or helping prepare dinner?
Small changes count.
A brain cannot function separately from the body supporting it.
Food, hydration, sleep, movement and physical health may not be the complete explanation for school struggles, but they form part of the foundation from which a child is expected to learn.
A child who is exhausted cannot regulate in the same way as a rested child.
A child who has not eaten adequately may struggle to sustain energy.
A child who rarely moves is missing opportunities to develop the physical systems that support coordination, balance and body awareness.
The temptation when our child is struggling is to search for the one thing that will explain everything.
Often there isn't one.
There may instead be several areas, each adding a little additional load.
And this is where the reverse can also be encouraging.
You do not necessarily need one enormous intervention.
Several manageable improvements can begin moving things in a better direction.
When your child is refusing school, it is easy to become overwhelmed.
Should you change their diet?
Remove screens?
Get an assessment?
Speak to school?
Work on sleep?
Investigate primitive reflexes?
Change their routine?
Look at sensory issues?
Research their gut?
Suddenly you have a list of 20 things and feel even more helpless than when you started.
Instead, start smaller.
Ask:
What is one thing I can make slightly better this week?
Perhaps breakfast becomes a little more nourishing.
Perhaps bedtime moves half an hour earlier.
Perhaps the phone disappears during meals.
Perhaps your child gets outside after school instead of going immediately onto a screen.
Perhaps you begin documenting exactly when the difficult moments occur.
You are not aiming for perfection.
You are building information and momentum.

When you are living through school struggles every day, everything can begin to blur together.
Monday morning was terrible.
Tuesday seemed fine.
Wednesday there was another meltdown.
Friday your child said they hated school.
But without documenting what is happening around those moments, it can be difficult to see patterns.
Did they sleep badly the night before?
Was it a PE day?
Was there more written work?
Did the difficulty begin before breakfast or only at the school gates?
Was the after-school meltdown worse following a noisy day or particular lesson?
What happened with screens?
What happened with food?
What did your child say?
Patterns turn a vague sense that “everything is going wrong” into information you can actually use.

There is another piece of this picture that parents often forget.
You.
When your child is screaming that they won't go to school and you are already late for work, calm regulation can feel almost impossible.
Your heart rate rises.
Their distress increases.
You become more urgent.
They become more overwhelmed.
Very quickly, both nervous systems are escalating together.
Parents do not need to be perfectly calm all the time.
That isn't realistic.
But becoming aware of your own stress response can change the interaction.
Before reasoning, persuading or problem-solving, sometimes the first job is simply to reduce the intensity.
Slow your voice.
Slow your breathing.
Reduce the number of words.
Give the child a moment.
Connect before trying to solve.
Supporting your child does not mean ignoring your own nervous system.
Your regulation is part of the environment they are trying to regulate within.

There is no single answer because there is no single cause of school refusal.
But there is a useful starting framework.
Document what happens before, during and after difficult school days.
Move beyond “Why won't you go?” and become curious about the actual demands your child finds difficult.
Consider sleep, food, movement, sensory demands, attention, learning, visual difficulties, physical development, health, stress and emotional wellbeing.
Share observations and ask what they are seeing in specific lessons, environments and times of day.
Persistent school refusal, anxiety, learning struggles or developmental concerns deserve appropriate professional support.
Depending on your child's needs, that may involve your GP, school SEND team, paediatric services or relevant qualified professionals.
Do not try to solve everything this week.
Choose one area, observe what happens and build from there.
A child who refuses school is not necessarily refusing education.
They may be refusing an experience that currently feels too difficult.
A child who avoids reading may not dislike learning.
A child who cannot sit still may not be deliberately disruptive.
A child who explodes when they get home may not have “saved their worst behaviour for you”.
There may be a child underneath all of this who has been working incredibly hard just to cope.
That does not mean there are no boundaries.
It does not mean every behaviour should simply be accepted.
It means we become much more effective when we understand what is driving the behaviour before deciding how to respond to it.
Behaviour is information.
The question is what we do with it.

Screens.

Begin with your child.
Observe them.
Track what is happening.
Look for connections.
Change one thing.
Then reassess.

School refusal can have many possible contributing factors, including anxiety, learning difficulties, sensory overwhelm, social experiences, developmental challenges, health problems, sleep difficulties and stress. Understanding when the refusal occurs and what aspects of school feel particularly difficult can help identify where support is needed.
Signs can include stomach aches, headaches, difficulty sleeping, distress on school mornings, reluctance to leave home, tearfulness, irritability, Sunday-night anxiety, school avoidance and emotional meltdowns before or after school.
Some children use enormous physical and emotional effort to cope throughout the school day. Once they reach the safety of home, accumulated stress and fatigue may become visible through tears, anger, withdrawal or meltdowns.
Attention depends on many systems working together, including sleep, sensory processing, emotional regulation, visual attention, working memory and the ability to remain physically comfortable and alert. Difficulty concentrating should therefore be explored rather than automatically viewed as lack of effort.
Persistent primitive reflex patterns may be one developmental factor associated with difficulties involving movement, posture, visual tracking and classroom skills. They do not explain every learning difficulty, so individual assessment is important.
Some retained reflex patterns may interfere with the development of eye stability, coordination and visual tracking, which can make reading more physically demanding. Reading difficulties can also arise for many other reasons and should be properly assessed.
Children may fidget for many reasons, including sensory needs, attention, stress, physical discomfort or immature postural control. Rather than simply suppressing the movement, it can be helpful to observe when it occurs and what appears to make it better or worse.
Start by identifying patterns and understanding what your child is finding difficult. Work with school, consider the child's physical, developmental and emotional needs, seek appropriate professional support where necessary and focus initially on one manageable change rather than attempting to solve everything at once.
